Social Media Challenge Alert!

Dear Howell Community,

A recent occurrence in neighboring districts and throughout our country involving a social media challenge is creating concern throughout our communities.  The “Momo Challenge” is an alleged form of cyber-bullying that spreads through social media and cell phones, enticing individuals to perform a series of dangerous tasks.  You can learn more about the “Momo Challenge” by visiting some of the links below. Please be warned that some of the images and stories may be disturbing.

The “Momo Challenge” is just one example of some of the dangers associated with various social media platforms, and we would like to encourage you to take this opportunity to monitor your children’s social media and use of digital devices such as cell phones, tablets and computers.  It is our understanding that the “Momo Challenge” is primarily being spread through Facebook or “What’sApp”.  While these digital venues are blocked on district-issued devices, individuals may still be able to access such sites through their personal devices and accounts.

In some circumstances, children have taken the concept of this challenge and utilized it in a face-to-face manner, thereby removing the digital aspect. While there are no confirmed uses of the “Momo Challenge” here in Howell Township Schools, we certainly wanted to share this information in an effort to help build awareness of this concerning trend.

Should you become aware that your children have been involved in this or any usage of dangerous social media games, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your building principal or guidance counselor so that we may partner in providing the safest environments for the students of Howell Township.
