Language Activities

Working on categories is a great way to expand your child’s vocabulary and their describing skills. If you think about it, we use categories to organize our world and our thoughts. The aisles of a grocery store, the clothes in our closets, and the books in the library are all arranged and sorted based on categories. When a child knows the category group nouns belong in, they have one more way to describe that noun. For example, an apple is a fruit, a shirt is a piece of clothing, and a bus is a transportation item.
The activities below are a great way to help your child work on sorting and describing items based on features and categories.
